Beef Improvement Federation meeting

For the first time in two years, the Beef Improvement Federation’s annual meeting and research symposium will be held in person. Dan Loy, Iowa Beef Center director and beef specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, said Iowa State University faculty and staff are excited to host this year’s event, set for June 22-25 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

The symposium features two-and-a-half days of educational programming and a full day of tours, with a special young producer symposium during the first afternoon. General sessions are set for Wednesday and Thursday mornings, and panel discussions on a variety of beef production and genetic improvement topics begin late each morning and continue through those afternoons.

Following the second full day’s sessions, participants will attend an evening social and dinner at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center on the Iowa State campus in Ames.

NE Ext Weed Mgt Field Day

Growers, crop consultants, ag professionals, and extension educators are encouraged to attend Nebraska Extension’s weed management field day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 23 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s South Central Agricultural Laboratory near Clay Center.

The field day will include on-site demonstrations of herbicides for weed control in corn, sorghum, and soybean. An early morning demonstration will focus on weed control in soybeans, followed by a demonstration of projects for weed control in corn and sorghum.  

“A number of projects will be demonstrated during the field day, including weed control in XtendFlex soybean, Enlist Soybean, and herbicide-resistant sorghum,” said Extension Weed Management Specialist Amit Jhala.

New this year for participants to learn about research project aimed at terminating cereal rye before and after planting soybean and control of volunteer soybean.   

Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) continuing education units are available.

Cuming Co Feeders Golf Tournament

Cuming County Feeders Association will host a Golf Tournament on Thursday June 24th at Indian Trails near Beemer, NE. 1pm check in, 1:30pm shotgun start. It’s a 4 person scramble, you can put together your own team or they will put you on one. There are pin and team prizes awarded at the steak social to follow. There’s also room for a few more sponsors (call Tyler Weborg about potential sponsorships). After the golf, there’s a 6pm social that will be held in the clubhouse. Steak Sandwiches will be served. IA Swine Day

The 2021 Iowa Swine Day is back as an in-person event and organizers said they are excited to be able to offer a great program of well-known speakers focused on important issues of the U.S. pork industry.

The 10th annual event will be held June 24 in the Scheman Building in the Iowa State Center on the Iowa State University campus. Similar to past events, the morning plenary session presentations will focus on current and future industry updates and perspectives.

Plenary speakers will set the learning stage: Bob Treadway of Treadway & Associates will talk about building resilience in the coming decade; Dr Brad Freking of New Fashion Pork will share lessons learned from COVID-19 and building resilience in the pork production supply chain; Dr. Hyatt Frobose of JYGA Technologies, Inc. will present info on Proposition 12 and related perceptions in response to legislation; and Dr. Jason Ross, director of Iowa Pork Industry Center and ISU animal science professor, will talk about discovery and innovation as foundations for industry advancement.

The afternoon is organized into four concurrent sessions with a total of 12 topics: components of sustainable production, foreign animal disease preparation, practical barn level operation and new research at ISU. Attendees may choose any of the sessions and topics.

The barbeque lunch is provided by TechMix, AB Vista and Lynch Livestock, and will be held outside just south of the building. Student attendees are invited to the students-only luncheon and presentation sponsored by Iowa Pork Producers Association.

Cost is $65, and students may attend at no charge with the registration deadline of midnight, June 17. No phone registrations are accepted.

There are some changes for 2021. Please be aware of these before registering.
    Facility space is limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, and registrations will be accepted on a space-available basis until June 17.

NE Ext Recordkeeping course

The next session of “Know Your Numbers, Know Your Options,” Nebraska Extension’s four-part farm and ranch record-keeping course, will be held virtually on Thursdays beginning June 3, from 10 a.m. to noon CDT, each day.

Participants should plan on attending each of the four workshop dates — June 3, 10, 17 and 24. The course requires participants to have an internet connection.

This course is designed to help farmers and ranchers understand their current financial position and how big decisions like large purchases, new leases or changes in production will affect their bottom line. Participants will work through the financial statements of a case study farm, watching pre-recorded videos, completing assignments, and participating in video chats. Upon completion of this program, participants will have a better understanding of how financial records can be used to make decisions and confidently discuss their financial position with their family, business partners, and lenders.

The course fee is $20 per participant and class size is limited to 20 people. Register online at Registration closes May 27.

NE Extension Land Application Sessions

Nebraska Extension’s Land Application Recertification sessions, called Applying Manure Management Concepts On-Farm, are scheduled to be in-person at many locations across the state in June, with the first taking place in May in Lexington.  

Each 2.5-hour session will focus on what fields producers should choose to best utilize manure nutrients and other benefits. The sessions will be highly participant-led and will have limited seating at each session. Participants will be given a scenario and asked to determine priority ranking of each field within the scenario. This ranking will be done at the end of each of the activities focused on manure nutrients, transportation cost, soil health, water quality, as well as neighbors and odors. Regulations and record keeping pertaining to manure storage and application will also be addressed during each session.

National Ag in the Classroom Conference

Registration is open for the 2021 National Ag in the Classroom Conference. The event will be held June 28 to July 1 in Des Moines, Iowa, at the Iowa Event Center/Hilton Des Moines Downtown.

Organizers say the conference will be offered as a hybrid event, which means it will be hosted in- person and virtual. The 2021 theme is ‘Field of Dreams.’

The conference moves to a different region every year and is only in the Midwest every four years. This will be the first time that it has been hosted in Iowa.

With cash corn prices hovering between $6.75-7 per bushel, profitability is strongly affected by protocols that increase feed efficiency and optimize animal health.  Profitability also depends on cattle market prices, and prices were impacted by events such as the Tyson Foods fire in Holcomb, Kansas, and COVID-19. Consequently, the beef industry is fervent about market volatility and market transparency.

Dairy Experience Forum

Registration is open for the fourth annual Dairy Experience Forum to be held virtually on July 13 from noon to 5 p.m. EDT. The forum is an innovative, disruptive event that will examine the key trends impacting consumers and opportunities to grow dairy sales. The forum brings together key stakeholders and dairy industry leaders at a time when consumer trends are changing, new technologies are emerging, and the demand for transparency is increasing.

This event is hosted by New England Dairy with partnership support from Midwest Dairy, other state and regional checkoff organizations, and the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center.  Topics will focus on how to drive sales growth by understanding consumers’ needs and becoming more relevant to them through innovation, partnerships and marketing. Discussions will address questions such as, “What global trends can I capitalize on as more dairy is shipped outside the U.S.?” and “What’s next for dairy?”

The forum features its popular live consumer focus group, allowing attendees to hear from multi- cultural Gen Z consumers about their opinions on dairy and farming, as well as purchasing decisions and how their buying habits changed during COVID-19.  There also will be small group breakout sessions for discussions and to brainstorm how the supply chain can learn from and use the learnings to continue connecting with consumers and increasing demand.

NE Ext 4R’s Stewardship field day

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is excited to offer the first annual 4Rs Nutrient Stewardship Field Day on July 15, 2021, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center, Ithaca.  

The 4Rs is a nutrient management and water stewardship approach which emphasizes fertilizer use with the right source, right rate, right time and right placement of fertilizers. This science-based approach focuses on the best nutrient management practices and sustainable crop production with increasing crop yield and farmer’s profit while protecting the environment.  

Key advantages of following 4Rs Nutrient Management Stewardship include:
    An efficient and effective soil fertility program for optimizing the crop nutrient requirements.
    Reducing the cost of fertilizer input while ensuring crop nutrient needs.
    Increasing synchrony of soil nutrients availability and crop growth and development.
    Reducing the potential for nutrient loss to surface water, groundwater and air.
    Enabling efficient use of water with the combined interaction of nutrients availability, crop growth and water use.

NE Pork Expo

AFAN Announces the 2021 Nebraska Pork Expo – July 21

Anyone considering expanding or diversifying their operations are invited to the Nebraska Pork Expo set for July 21 in York, Neb.  The program will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holthus Convention Center. Admission is free and lunch will be provided. Registration is requested by July 7, 2021.

The day will begin with a tradeshow and breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Attendees will hear sessions on marketing and risk management, sustainability and renewable energy, ASF and traceability along with much more throughout the day. Panel discussions will be held over niche and contract pork production. A social hour will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. to round out the day.

USGC Board of Delegates Meeting

While international travel restrictions due to COVID-19 have required the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) to postpone its 61st Annual Board of Delegates meeting in Calgary, Canada, until 2023, USGC Chairman Jim Raben announced this week that the 2021 summer meeting will be moved to Des Moines, Iowa, July 28-30.

“My theme of Building Relationships, Building Trade has taken on new meaning during the pandemic and in how we accomplish these tasks to keep trade moving around the world,” Raben said. “The Council has decided to offer its 61st Annual Board of Delegates Meeting in a hybrid format – so attendees can choose either an in-person or virtual experience.”

Nebraska Extension’s efforts to assist farmers and ranchers to achieve profitable outcomes continue with a series of workshops that will offer strategies and tools to reduce risk exposure associated with cattle production.

In June and July, extension specialists and educators will conduct “Managing Cattle for Profit in 2021” in Thedford, North Platte, Alliance, Norfolk and Ainsworth.

Each workshop will offer information on current issues and opportunities in the cattle industry, trends in grazing land cash rental rates — including current cash rental rates and designing flex leases — and managing price risk with futures, options and insurance.

Nebraska RibFest

Nebraska Ribfest Returns to Lincoln This August

The long-loved, famous Nebraska Ribfest is set to return to Lincoln after a 2-year hiatus. New this year, it will occur at the Lancaster Event Center (LEC) Fairgrounds August 5–7 2021 as part of the Lancaster County Super Fair’s ten-day 150th anniversary, July 29–August 7.

The LEC Fairgrounds team has partnered with Nebraska Pork Producers Association to bring Nebraska Ribfest back to the community. Nationally recognized BBQ vendors will be competing August 5–7 to show off their best delicacies, with the champion awarded on the afternoon of Saturday, August 7. Live local bands will be showcased nightly, with a DJ host every afternoon. Full list of participating BBQ vendors will be available June 1 at

Also new this year, admission to Nebraska Ribfest will be completely free beyond the normal fair gate fees. Free fair gate admission tickets will be available at U-Stop Lincoln locations from June 1–Aug 7, while supplies last. Other fair gate ticket sponsor locations will be shared on as they become available. Otherwise, fair gate admission is $3/person/entry. Parking is $5/vehicle.

BBQ vendors will be serving the public on Thursday, August 5 from 5-11pm and Fri-Sat Aug 6–7 from 1-11pm in the Attraction Zone on the north side of the fairgrounds. Full-service liquor bar and ample seating will be available in the adjacent beer garden and shade tent.

Husker Harvest Days

Farm Progress will return to live events with the two can’t-miss farm shows of the year; Farm Progress Show in Decatur, IL, August 31 – September 2, 2021 and Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island, NE, September 14-16, 2021.

A survey conducted by Readex Research revealed growing confidence and positivity among prior attendees, indicating 84% of past show attendees will attend in-person or plan to attend if scheduling allows.

The industry has not convened since early 2020, therefore groundbreaking product introductions and technological advances have yet to be seen in-person in over 18 months. The first opportunity for the ag market to experience these new products live will be at the Farm Progress Show and Husker Harvest Days events.

The entire Farm Progress team is working to ensure that the agriculture community can reconnect in meaningful and safe ways when returning in-person to these highly-anticipated annual events. The International Conference on Pig Survivability is part of the Improving Pig Survivability project. This five-year, interdisciplinary, multi-university project is funded by the National Pork Board and FARR, aimed at reducing mortality in the U.S. swine industry by 1% or more per year of the project. The project is being organized as a collaborative effort by Iowa State University, Kansas State University and Purdue University.
