The National Pork Board is accepting applications through May 22 for the Agricultural Marketing Fellowship. Students who are accepted for full-time enrollment in a graduate/professional school program for the 2019-2020 academic year are encouraged to apply.
Up to three students will be selected for fellowships of $20,000 spread across two academic years. The fellowship requires students to pursue coursework and research in the livestock and meat marketing areas.

Photovoltaic (PV) panels are an increasingly common sight at homes, farms, and businesses across the Midwest. Declining cost of PV solar installations makes installing a distributed solar electric system enticing for many farmers. Evaluating the financial investment in solar requires careful consideration of system costs, the value of production, and operation and maintenance costs. Unfortunately, some proposals are hard to understand making it difficult to make fully informed investment decisions.
This six part professional development webinar series will provide you with resources and tools to help consult farmers who are considering investing in a solar electric system so they are able to make fully informed investment decisions. Although the webinars are geared to an agricultural audience, the information that will be shared applies to anyone looking for information on making a wise solar energy investment.

Those interested in beekeeping have a new learning opportunity. The Center for Rural Affairs and University of Nebraska-Lincoln are partnering to offer Great Plains Master Beekeeping, a regional beekeeper training and certification program.
The program’s purpose is to increase the amount of well-educated beekeepers, to provide new and experienced beekeepers with resources to continue their education, and to help others become advocates for bees.
The Center for Rural Affairs is leading Exploratory Beekeeping classes, with four set for this summer:
– May 29 in Macy,
– June 15 in Schuyler,
– June 22 in Grand Island, and
– Aug. 28 in Crete.
Sessions in Schuyler, Grand Island, and Crete will be in English and translated into Spanish.

Openings are available for one-on-one, confidential farm finance and ag law consultations being conducted across the state each month. An experienced ag law attorney and ag financial counselor will be available to address farm and ranch issues related to financial planning, estate and transition planning, farm loan programs, debtor/creditor law, water rights, and other relevant matters. The clinics offer an opportunity to seek an experienced outside opinion on issues affecting your farm or ranch.

Farmers planning to chemigate during the 2019 growing season must renew chemigation permits by June 1 to meet state deadline requirements. Chemigation is the application of any chemical, fertilizer or pesticide through an irrigation system. To legally chemigate in Nebraska, an operator must be certified to apply chemicals and obtain a chemigation permit from their local NRD.
An irrigation system that has not been renewed prior to the June 1 deadline cannot apply chemicals through the system until a new permit is obtained. Chemigation renewal permits cost $20. New chemigation permits cost $50, and the applicant cannot use the system until it passes a mandatory inspection. All permits must be submitted to the LENRD office at 1508 Square Turn Boulevard in Norfolk.
By renewing a permit by June 1, a producer may proceed with chemigation. An inspection does not have to be performed prior to chemigation for a renewal application. However, a random chemigation inspection may be necessary later in the season as part of the LENRD’s routine summer inspections as required by state law.
Approximately 2,016 chemigation permits were approved by the LENRD in 2018. For more information on renewing or obtaining chemigation permits, call the Lower Elkhorn NRD at 371-7313.
The Nebraska Ethanol Board will meet Friday, May 31 at 11:00 a.m. The meeting will be held in Grand Island, Nebraska, in the community meeting room at Bosselman Enterprises Headquarters, 1607 S. Locust St.
