Friday, May 10– The Oregon Trail Dance Club will have a Spaghetti Supper and a Dance at the IOOF Hall, 800 N Street in Gering.  Supper will be from 5:00-6:30 with a mainstream dance at 7:00.   Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under which are available at the door.  Bake sale going on during the meal.

Eastern Wyoming 70th Annual Commencement @ EWC Gymnasium - Torrington

Eastern Wyoming College has announced that Dr. Donna Beth Downer has been selected as the commencement speaker at the 70th annual event to be held on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 7:00 pm in the EWC Verl Petsch, Jr. Activities Center Gymnasium.

A graduation barbecue for students and their families will be held in the Student Center from 4:00 – 6:00 pm prior to the commencement ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm in the Petsch Center Gymnasium.  Mr. Roger Humphrey, Vice President for Student Services, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

The EWC Commencement ceremony will be available by webcast. Please visit the College’s website or social media pages for the link. Overflow seating will be available in the EWC Cafeteria with the webcast available for viewing.

Dr. Downer is a Goshen County native, she grew-up on the family ranch north of Torrington and developed a love for animals, people, and rural connections.  Dr. Downer went on to earn her PhD from Purdue University and while her travels and have taken her around the world, her heart has always resided in Goshen County.

Dr. Downer’s passion and belief in higher education comes from 20+ years of service as a faculty member and service as the former Dean of Home Economics at the University of Nevada and the University of Alabama.

 

“The Mustang” @ Historic Midwest Theater

The Historic Midwest Theater announces the film “The Mustang” will show this weekend May 10-12.

Movie Synopsis: Roman (Matthias Schoenaerts), a convict in a rural Nevada prison who struggles to escape his violent past, is required to participate in an “outdoor maintenance” program as part of his state-mandated social rehabilitation. Spotted by a no-nonsense veteran trainer (Bruce Dern) and helped by an outgoing fellow inmate and trick rider (Jason Mitchell), Roman is accepted into the selective wild horse training section of the program, where he finds his own humanity in gentling an especially unbreakable mustang.

Stamp Out Hunger
May 11 all-day

The U.S. Postal Service and volunteer organizations will again collect non perishable food items during their 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger Campaign.

Making a donation is easy.  Just leave your NON PERISHABLE food donation in a bag near your mail box before your carrier arrives on Saturday May 11th.

Collected food will be taken to local food pantries and community organizations for distribution.

Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single day food collection.

11th annual Summit to Summit Run/Walk @ Gering

Summit Christian College 11th annual Summit to Summit Run/Walk will held Saturday, May 11 in Gering. This challenging and beautiful 7.2-mile run/walk from the Summit Christian College campus in Gering to the summit of Scotts Bluff National Monument and back has become a favorite early spring community outing. The Run will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the Walk following immediately at 7:35 a.m.

The Summit Christian College Alumni Association’s benefit pancake breakfast and kids’ bounce houses will also be held during the event, and the always anticipated landing of the AirLink helicopter is scheduled for approximately 9:00 a.m. weather permitting.

Online registration is open at www.summittosummit.org. until Noon on Friday, May 3. All online registrations are guaranteed an event T-shirt. Mail-in and walk-in entries will be accepted until 7 a.m. the morning of the event on May 11.

Entry fees are $35 for all timed runners; $35 for adult walkers age 16 and up; $20 for youth walkers age 10 to 15; and $10 for walkers age 9 and under.

Naval Ships with Wyoming Names @ Homesteaders Museum - Torrington

The Homesteaders Museum and the City of Torrington are excited to announce the arrival of the exhibit Naval Ships with Wyoming Names, a traveling exhibit from the Fort Casper Museum. This exhibit will be open to the public at the Homesteaders Museum on 495 Main Street in Torrington, WY with no cost of admission until the end of May. Museum hours are Monday through Friday 9:30 am to 4:00 pm and by appointment.

This exhibit was organized by Fort Caspar Museum as a traveling exhibit that features many of the U.S. Navy ships named after the state of Wyoming—its people, cities and towns, counties, and rivers—beginning with the earliest ship in 1900 up through ones that are in service today

WNCC’s 87th Commencement @ Cougar Palace WNCC

WNCC’s 87th Annual Commencement will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Cougar Palace. WNCC will confer 297 degrees or certificates at the ceremony.

Additionally,  WNCC will be hosting a GED graduation ceremony at 11 a.m. and a nurse pinning at 2 p.m. Both events will be held in the John N. Harms Center Plex.

Dr. Thomas RaShad Easley, who serves as the assistant dean for community and inclusion at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies will be delivering the commencement address Saturday.
Following commencement, a reception will be held in Pioneer Hall with refreshments and music.

COMMUNITY FISHING NIGHT – SCOTTSBLUFF @ Riverside Zoo Ponds

Sponsored by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, events will be held at venues across the state. Look for the Family Fishing Trailer, or a gathering of NGPC Staff and volunteers, where loaner rods and reels, bait and fishing instruction are available free to participants.

This is the perfect opportunity for people of all ages who have never been fishing or have not fished for years to learn.

All participants ages 16 and older need a fishing license (OutdoorNebraska.org for permits).

DAV Van volunteer drivers needed

Volunteers are needed to drive the Disabled American Veterans Van to transport veterans from Gering, NE to the Cheyenne, WY VA Medical Center.

Please be advised, the DAV Van drivers don’t have to be veterans and there are medical limitations on who is able to drive.
