NE Corn Board Candidate deadline
May 17 all-day

Notice is hereby given that the terms for three members of the Nebraska Corn Development, Utilization and Marketing Board will expire June 30, 2019, and Nebraska’s corn checkoff program is seeking candidates to petition for those districts. The open positions represent Districts 1, 4 and 5.

District 1: Includes the counties of Butler, Cass, Douglas, Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Lancaster, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Saline, Sarpy, Saunders, Seward and Richardson (Note: David Bruntz, the current District 1 director, has indicated he will pursue re-appointment).

District 4: Includes the counties of Burt, Cedar, Colfax, Cuming, Dakota, Dixon, Dodge, Knox, Madison, Pierce, Stanton, Thurston, Washington and Wayne (Note: Debbie Borg, the current District 4 director, has indicated she will pursue re-appointment).

District 5: Includes the counties of Buffalo, Dawson, Hall, Howard and Sherman (Note: Tim Scheer, the current District 5 director, has indicated that he will not pursue re-appointment).

Appointments to the board for Districts 1, 4 and 5 are made by the Governor of Nebraska. Any candidate for appointment may place his or her name on the candidacy list by filing a petition with the Nebraska Corn Board. Qualified candidates include those individuals who are citizens of Nebraska, are at least 21 years old, have been actively engaged in growing corn in Nebraska for a period of five years and derive a substantial portion of their income from growing corn. Board members who currently represent these districts are also eligible to re-petition.

Petitions may be obtained by writing the Nebraska Corn Board (P.O. Box 95107, Lincoln, NE 68509-5107), by calling 800-632-6761 or emailing nikki.bentzinger@nebraska.gov. A candidacy petition must carry the signatures of at least 50 corn producers from that district. All petitions must be received by the Nebraska Corn Board no later than 5:00 p.m. central time on Friday, May 17, 2019. Faxed copies do not qualify.

NRCS Cover Crops program deadline

To help manage cropland damaged by Nebraska’s severe spring weather, the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is providing funds to plant cover crops on cropland acres. Producers are encouraged to apply by May 17, 2019, or June 21, 2019 at their local USDA Service Center.

This funding is available statewide in order to assist the widespread recovery work on cropland acres directly impacted by the severe weather in March.  The highest priority cropland includes land which is unable to be planted with a cash crop and/or harvested in 2019.

Cover crops prevent erosion, improve soil’s physical and biological properties, supply nutrients, suppress weeds, improve the availability of soil water, and break pest cycles along with various other benefits. Cover crops can also potentially be grazed.

Work currently being done to maintain conservation structures as well as sediment removal, debris removal or grading and reshaping can be stabilized and protected from further erosion and damage by planting a cover crop.

Farmer’s Irrigation Water Orders

This is to determine if there will be enough orders to turn the water on and when to put water in the canal system. All orders will need to be in by noon.

I-29 MooU – Dairy Revenue Protection webinar

I-29 Moo University will host a webinar to review the Dairy Revenue Protection and Dairy Margin Coverage programs at noon on Friday, May 17.  Presenters will include:
–    Marin Bozic, assistant professor in economics at the University of Minnesota.
–    Josh Newton, crop insurance team leader with Compeer Financial.
–    Cassandra Monger, dairy industry specialist with Compeer Financial.

Bozic will outline developments in the Dairy Revenue Protection program and how producers are benefiting from it, as well as provide forecasts for the next year.

Newton and Monger will focus on the Dairy Revenue Protection program from a lender’s perspective, including results from the first quarter in 2019. They will discuss how the Dairy Revenue Protection program is set up to serve each operation, how it fits into a producer’s overall risk management plan and execution of the program from application to endorsement.

Ag Land Mgt quarterly webinar

The second edition of Agricultural Land Management Quarterly will cover 2019 cash rental rates and land values in Nebraska and critical communication issues between landlords and tenants. The webinar will also include a special segment addressing flood related damages on rented properties. The webinar is May 20 at 6:30 p.m. CT and can be viewed online at agecon.unl.edu/landmanagement.

Jim Jansen and Allan Vyhnalek of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Agricultural Economics lead the webinars. Jansen’s work focuses on agricultural finance and land economics. He directs the annual Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey and Report. Vyhnalek is a farm succession and transition extension educator.

There will also be time for webinar participants to get questions answered during the program. Participants are encouraged to sign up in advance and submit questions before the event at agecon.unl.edu/landmanagement

Photovoltaic (PV) panels are an increasingly common sight at homes, farms, and businesses across the Midwest.  Declining cost of PV solar installations makes installing a distributed solar electric system enticing for many farmers. Evaluating the financial investment in solar requires careful consideration of system costs, the value of production, and operation and maintenance costs. Unfortunately, some proposals are hard to understand making it difficult to make fully informed investment decisions.

This six part professional development webinar series will provide you with resources and tools to help consult farmers who are considering investing in a solar electric system so they are able to make fully informed investment decisions.  Although the webinars are geared to an agricultural audience, the information that will be shared applies to anyone looking for information on making a wise solar energy investment.

Ag Marketing Fellowship deadline

The National Pork Board is accepting applications through May 22 for the Agricultural Marketing Fellowship. Students who are accepted for full-time enrollment in a graduate/professional school program for the 2019-2020 academic year are encouraged to apply.

Up to three students will be selected for fellowships of $20,000 spread across two academic years. The fellowship requires students to pursue coursework and research in the livestock and meat marketing areas.

Explore Beekeeping classes

Those interested in beekeeping have a new learning opportunity.  The Center for Rural Affairs and University of Nebraska-Lincoln are partnering to offer Great Plains Master Beekeeping, a regional beekeeper training and certification program.

The program’s purpose is to increase the amount of well-educated beekeepers, to provide new and experienced beekeepers with resources to continue their education, and to help others become advocates for bees.

The Center for Rural Affairs is leading Exploratory Beekeeping classes, with four set for this summer:
  – May 29 in Macy,
  – June 15 in Schuyler,
  – June 22 in Grand Island, and
  – Aug. 28 in Crete.

Sessions in Schuyler, Grand Island, and Crete will be in English and translated into Spanish.

LENRD Chemigation permits
May 31 all-day

Farmers planning to chemigate during the 2019 growing season must renew chemigation permits by June 1 to meet state deadline requirements. Chemigation is the application of any chemical, fertilizer or pesticide through an irrigation system. To legally chemigate in Nebraska, an operator must be certified to apply chemicals and obtain a chemigation permit from their local NRD.

An irrigation system that has not been renewed prior to the June 1 deadline cannot apply chemicals through the system until a new permit is obtained. Chemigation renewal permits cost $20. New chemigation permits cost $50, and the applicant cannot use the system until it passes a mandatory inspection. All permits must be submitted to the LENRD office at 1508 Square Turn Boulevard in Norfolk.

By renewing a permit by June 1, a producer may proceed with chemigation. An inspection does not have to be performed prior to chemigation for a renewal application. However, a random chemigation inspection may be necessary later in the season as part of the LENRD’s routine summer inspections as required by state law.

Approximately 2,016 chemigation permits were approved by the LENRD in 2018. For more information on renewing or obtaining chemigation permits, call the Lower Elkhorn NRD at 371-7313.

Cream of the Crop Dairy Show

The 20th annual Cream of the Crop dairy show will be held on Sat June 1 2019 at the Cuming Co Fairgrounds in West Point, NE. The show is open to everyone, youth and adults. Members of 4-H and FFA are encouraged to attend. Eligible breeds include Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn, and crossbreds.

Registrations start at 8am the day of the show. There will be a showmanship contest to start the show. Divisions will be Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Pee-wee. There is also a judging contest after showmanship. There will be three divisions…. Junior, Senior, and adult.

After the judging event, the dairy show will start.

IA Century & Heritage Farms application

Applications are being accepted now for the 2019 Century and Heritage Farm Program. The program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. It recognizes families that have owned their farm for 100 years in the case of Century Farms and 150 years for Heritage Farms.

Applications are available on the Department’s website at by clicking on the Century Farm or Heritage Farm link under “Programs”.
