32nd annual Tour de Nebraska Bicycle Tour

A total of 467 cyclists on the 32ndAnnual Tour de Nebraska bicycle adventure will roll out of Sidney on Wednesday, June 19th and travel five days to Kimball, Gering, Scottsbluff, Bridgeport and back to Sidney.

With this number of cyclists on this year’s Tour de Nebraska annual bicycle adventure, it’s even more critical for motorists and cyclists to use extra caution on the road.

Exhibit: “100 Years of Scotts Bluff National Monument” @ Legacy of the Plains Museum

Scotts Bluff National Monument’s Centennial Exhibit will be on display at the Legacy of the Plains Museum this summer.

The exhibit titled “100 Years of Scotts Bluff National Monument” will be open to the public starting Thursday, May 9th, through September.

Showcasing the vast history and culture at Scotts Bluff National Monument, the exhibit will feature an original soap box derby car, an adobe brick made by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930’s, historical photographs, interpretive displays and the William Henry Jackson prints originally housed in the Visitor Center, which is undergoing a major renovation and expansion project.

The centennial exhibit will be free and open to the public.  Regular museum admission is required for the main gallery.

Legacy of the Plains Museum is open Monday through
Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Honor Flight participants on their way to D.C. @ Scottsbluff

12th Honor Flight from Western Nebraska will take 11 Korean and Vietnam Veterans and their guardians to Washington D.C.

They will arrive in Scottsbluff for lunch at the Elks at Noon on June 20th, and will depart at 1pm enroute to Denver International Airport.

You are invited to help welcome the Veterans by holding a flag, furnished by the Patriot Guard Riders.

The Schedule: June 20th

Arriving on Highway 26 from Minatare, they will turn west on East Overland to 5th Avenue.

North of 5th Avenue to 20th Street

West on 20th Street to 1st Avenue, then south on 1st Ave to the Elks

12:00 Noon Arrive at the Elks for lunch, 1614 1st Ave.

1:00pm Depart for Kimball and points south to Denver

Mosquito Spraying @ Gering and Terrytown

The City of Gering will begin spraying for mosquitoes on Tuesday, June 18, 2019.  Spraying will continue every Tuesday and Thursday evening; weather permitting, for the remainder of the mosquito season.

The City of Terrytown has contracted with the City of Gering for mosquito spraying on Tuesdays in residential areas, in the parks and along trails.

Panhandle June Wheat and Pea Field Days @ UN-L High Plains Ag Lab - Sidney

The UNL High Plains Ag Lab near Sidney will sponsor its annual June field day on June 20 this year. It’s an opportunity to hear updates on research going on at the ag lab and view the results from winter wheat and pea variety trials. In addition to HPAL, wheat and pea variety tours will be conducted June 20 and 21 at cooperators’ farms in the Panhandle.

The schedule of wheat tours:

June 20, High Plains Ag Lab, Sidney: During the HPAL field day, Morning field day featuring wheat on dryland crops, grazing systems, and integrated crop-livestock research.

June 20, Box Butte County: 4 p.m., irrigated wheat variety plot tour at Chris Cullan farm, Box Butte County. From Berea, ¾ mile north on Highway 385; plot is on west side of highway.

June 20, Box Butte County: 7 p.m., dryland wheat variety plot tour at Chris Cullan farm. From Berea, north on Highway 2 for 2.7 miles, then west on Hall Rd 0.65 miles. Plot is on the south side of the road.

 

Pea Field Days

Field pea plot tours are scheduled for June 20 in Cheyenne County and June 21 in Box Butte County.

June 20, 8 a.m., Cheyenne County at High Plains Ag Lab (Rainfed): From HPAL office, 0.25 miles east on CR 32N, then north on trial road.

June 21, 9 a.m., Box Butte County, Greg Hansen Farm: From Hemingford, 7 miles east on Dodge RD, 2 miles south on CR 62. Plot is on east side of road.

Registration Deadline: Family History Center Field Trip

Thursday, June 20th is the registration deadline for the West Nebraska Family Research and History Center’s Field Trip to Alliance to visit the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery, Swallows Military Museum and Knight Museum and Sandhills Center.

Becoming an “Outdoors-Family” Camp

Kick off the summer enjoying the outdoors with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission at a Becoming an Outdoors-Family Camp.
The camp will be held June 21- 23 at Bridgeport State Recreation Area and Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area.

This program is provided to families who are new to camping and the outdoors. With the expert guidance of instructors, families will learn how to fish, camp, kayak, and cook outdoors in a relaxed and safe environment.

All food will be provided, as well as fishing, kayaking and
shooting equipment. Participants will bring their own tent
and camping supplies. Some loaner tents will be available.

Mosquito Spraying @ Scottsbluff

The City of Scottsbluff Public Works Department mosquito spraying program will be on Fridays, weather permitting, from 3:00 A.M. to 7:00 A.M. If it is raining or the wind is above 10 MPH, we will not be spraying.

This schedule will be throughout the summer to let the public know

Summer Solstice at Carhenge

Carhenge will celebrate Summer Solstice with events on Friday, June 21, 2019.

Michelle Hickox, a certified yoga instructor from Alliance, will begin the day with sunrise yoga at 5:00 a.m. Please bring your own mat.

Holly Wade, fitness expert and Hemingford native will lead sunset yoga, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Please bring your own mat.

Edison Red Nest and the Native Futures Program will lead a group of local youth in traditional Native American singing and dancing and a Creator’s Game of Lacrosse, a traditional Native American sport. This program will begin at 1:30 p.m. and last approximately an hour in the field just south of the original Carhenge circle of cars. Please bring your own lawn chairs.

In other Solstice-related celebrations, Carnegie Arts Center will lead a rock-painting workshop on Wednesday, June 19 at Carhenge from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rocks will then be labeled with instructions and hidden around Carhenge.

Friday Truck and Tractor Pull CANCELLED

The rescheduled Heartland Series Truck and Tractor pull at the Scotts Bluff County Fairgrounds in Mitchell has been cancelled for Friday, June 21st.  Ticket holders can either stop by the fair office for refund or use tix for Fair tractor pull event.

 

Saturday night the 22nd, the pullers will be at the Camp Clarke Truck and Tractor Pull at the Morrill County Fairgrounds at Bridgeport.
