ISU Confinement Site Manure Applicator workshops

Confinement site manure applicators and anyone interested in learning about manure issues should plan to attend a two-hour workshop offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in January or February 2021. These workshops are offered in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, registration is required. No walk-ins allowed. There is no fee to attend the workshops, but applicators will need to pay certification fees to complete certification requirements.

A total of 64 counties will participate in the confinement site manure applicator workshops. In addition, a series of six dry/solid manure applicator certification meetings will be held in February.  These meetings are tailored toward dry/solid manure for either Commercial or Confinement Site manure applicators. ISU Extension and Outreach county offices have a complete list of workshop dates and locations, or view a list online.

The workshops serve as initial certification for those applicators who are not currently certified, recertification for those renewing licenses and continuing education for those applicators in their second or third year of their license.

Due to uniform certification deadlines, applicators are encouraged to attend workshops prior to March 1 to avoid being assessed a late fee of $12.50 for those who are re-certifying. Those unable to attend one of the workshops need to schedule time with their ISU Extension and Outreach county office to watch the training video. Due to scheduling conflicts, extension offices will no longer accept walk-in appointments to watch these videos but do offer scheduled dates and times to provide this training. If you can’t attend training during one of the scheduled reshow dates at your county extension office, you will be charged a $10 fee to view the training at your convenience.

If attending the workshops or watching the two-hour training video is not convenient, confinement site manure applicators may contact their local DNR field office to schedule an appointment to take the certification exam to meet certification requirements.

Applicators also have another option, online certification, through which an applicator can take their training online at DNR MAC eLearning site at https://elearning-dnr.iowa.gov/. The applicator will need to sign-in and get an A&A account.

ICA Beef Products Committee mtg

Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is wrapping up this year’s policy development process on Zoom. Members of the cattle industry are invited to attend the virtual Policy Committee Meetings and the Annual Meeting during the months of December and January.

Producers across the state will dive deep into issues affecting Iowa’s cattle industry. Attendees will review expiring policies, hear updates on hot topics in the industry and debate new policies. Each meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

With changes in Washington, D.C. and in Iowa, we need your input now more than ever to ensure the interests of the beef producers are protected and pursued. As the definitive voice of Iowa’s cattlemen, it’s important that we have policy on the books to support the beef cattle industry.

Sowbridge registration deadline

SowBridge, the distance educational series for those who work with sows, boars and piglets, and with genetic and reproductive issues, begins its next program year in February 2021, and registration is now underway. This opportunity pairs electronically provided materials with live presentations via teleconference. Suggestions from past participants help with planning the next year’s topics and speakers, and maintain the program’s value, according to Ken Stalder, Iowa State University animal science professor and extension swine specialist.

Stalder, who also is the Iowa contact for SowBridge, said registration cost remains at $200 ($U.S.) for the first registration from an entity, and each subsequent registration from the same entity is half that amount, for subscribers from the U.S. or Canada.

SowBridge is designed to improve the understanding and application of various tools and techniques involved in daily care of the breeding herd and piglets. Sessions are typically scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month but occasionally may be moved a week to avoid interference with national industry events or holidays.

The distance learning approach allows people to take part without having to travel, take time from work or worry about weather conditions. During each session, participants can ask questions of the industry expert presenter and discuss with other participants from the comfort of their home, office or swine unit. Remember that SowBridge can serve as continuing education for employees and meets this requirement for PQA certification.

Before each session, participants receive a link to download the presentation and any additional information provided by the presenter. Participants call in for the audio portion of each session to listen to the presenter and while following the presentation file on their own computer or device. Sessions begin at 11:15 a.m. Central Time and last no more than an hour.

Each registration provides access to one phone line per session and all program materials for each registration, including audio recordings of the live session. Materials, delivery process and program costs are slightly different for those with non-U.S. mailing addresses. Regardless of location, those with questions on the program or registration should contact Sherry Hoyer at Iowa Pork Industry Center at Iowa State for more information. NE Corn Board nominations

Notice is hereby given that the terms for three members of the Nebraska Corn Development, Utilization and Marketing Board, also known as the Nebraska Corn Board, will expire June 30, 2021, and Nebraska’s corn checkoff program is seeking candidates to petition for those districts. The open positions represent Districts 6, 7 and 8.

District 6 – Includes the counties of Hayes, Frontier, Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, Hitchcock, Red Willow, Furnas and Harlan (Note: Ted Schrock, the current District 6 director, has indicated he will pursue re-appointment.)
District 7 – Includes the counties of Boyd, Holt, Antelope, Garfield, Wheeler, Boone, Platte, Valley, Greeley and Nance. (Note: David Merrell, the current District 7 director, has indicated he will not pursue re-appointment.)

Qualified candidates include those individuals who are citizens of Nebraska, are at least 21 years old, have been actively engaged in growing corn in Nebraska for a period of five years and derive a substantial portion of their income from growing corn. Board members who currently represent these districts are also eligible to re-petition.

U.S. Custom Harvesters Annual Convention

U.S. Custom Harvesters to Host Annual Convention in January

U.S. Custom Harvesters (USCHI) will host its 37th annual convention in Des Moines, Iowa, January 21-23, 2021. The convention will be an in-person event.

For the first time in five years, the annual convention will feature the four main U.S. forage harvester equipment companies. Krone, CLAAS, New Holland and John Deere will be showcasing their newest equipment to USCHI members in January.

USCHI is an association of professional custom harvesters. Since 1984, USCHI has hosted an annual event to convene members and partners to learn about new equipment, harvesting techniques and to network.

IFBF Economic Summit series

NE DEE Clean Diesel Rebate program

The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy’s 2020 Clean Diesel Rebate Program is now accepting applications for two types of rebate – local diesel truck replacements and agricultural irrigation pump diesel engine replacements. Applications must be submitted to NDEE by January 22, 2021 to be considered.

NDEE established the Nebraska Clean Diesel Program in 2008 to distribute funding received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the purpose of reducing diesel emissions and improving air quality in the state.

The number of rebates offered in each category listed below may be subject to change, depending on the number of applications received in each category. Rebates will be offered for:

Local Diesel Truck Replacements – Funding will assist with the early replacement of diesel trucks with new, cleaner trucks.  Trucks eligible for replacement are heavy-duty diesel refuse trucks and medium to heavy-duty diesel trucks used in local construction, delivery, or maintenance operations. The new trucks may be powered by diesel engines or by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines that comply with stricter nitrogen oxide emission standards. NDEE will reimburse 35% of the cost of a new CNG-fueled truck up to a maximum of $120,000, or 25% of the cost of a new diesel truck up to a maximum of $70,000. NDEE anticipates funding replacement of five.  Individual applicants may apply for a rebate for up to two trucks.

Agricultural Irrigation Pump Diesel Engine Replacement – Funding will assist farmers with the replacement of irrigation pump diesel engines with electric equipment. Diesel engines may be replaced with an electric motor to power a surface pump or by connecting an existing submersible pump directly to the electric grid. NDEE will reimburse 60% of the cost of the electrical equipment, installation, and required electric line extension up to a maximum of $20,000. NDEE anticipates funding 20 irrigation engine rebates.
·         To be eligible, the existing diesel irrigation engine must have engine horsepower and model year within the ranges specified below:
0-50 HP – 2006 and Newer, Unregulated – Tier 2
51-300 HP – 1996 and Newer, Tier 0 – Tier 3
301+ HP – 1986 and Newer, Tier 0 – Tier 3
·         The diesel engine must be in operating condition and have historical operations of at least 250 hours per year over the past three years.  A pre-replacement inspection may be made to verify the engine condition.
·         The diesel engine must have a legible serial number stamped into the block or listed on an engine data tag affixed to the engine.

IA Renewable Fuels Summit

Free registration for the 2021 summit is now open.

Iowa Pork Congress – Changes for 2021

The January 2021 Iowa Pork Congress will look much different than the 48 previous events hosted by the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA). The IPPA Board of Directors decided to cancel the Iowa Pork Congress trade show, which would have been Jan. 27 and 28. The trade show and educational sessions held during the two days typically attract 4,000 to 5,000 people involved in pork production from Iowa and the Midwest.
 
As scheduled, IPPA will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. “We have worked closely with the Iowa Events Center staff in planning this required in-person event so that social distancing can be maintained throughout the day,” Paustian said.
 
The day will also include the Master Pork Producers Awards program, as well as the announcement of the 2021 Iowa Pork Youth Leadership Team. Both the awards program and announcement of the Youth Leadership Team will be seated events held in rooms that allow social distancing. They will also be streamed online for those who chose to watch the events from their homes.
 
The educational seminars held during Iowa Pork Congress and the Iowa Pork Foundation Auction will both move to virtual formats. As more details on that programming are developed, the information will be shared on www.IowaPorkCongress.org.
 
Additionally, the Taste of Elegance restaurant event that usually kicks off Iowa Pork Congress, and the youth swine judging contest that occurs at the end, have both been postponed until later in 2021.
 
The Iowa Pork Congress has been North America’s most successful winter swine trade show and conference. The 2022 show is scheduled for Jan. 26-27, 2022.

LENRD Groundwater Mgt Area Hearing

High nitrates in our drinking water can have negative health impacts, and some communities have been required to invest significant financial resources to upgrade their infrastructure in order to deliver a safe, reliable source of drinking water. The Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District (LENRD) is proposing changes to the Groundwater Management Area in portions of Cuming, Colfax, and Dodge Counties in an effort to keep the nitrate levels from increasing. The proposed management area was scheduled to be addressed at a series of public meetings in December and January. However, due to COVID, they will now have a virtual meeting on Thursday, December 17th at 6:30 p.m. The virtual meeting will be conducted using Zoom Webinar and will allow viewers to ask questions using the chat function during the event. The webinar will be recorded and the information presented will be revisited at the Open House Public Hearing on January 28th in West Point.

Additional Background: The Lower Elkhorn NRD has been monitoring groundwater quality across their 15-counties in Northeast Nebraska for over 40 years. In the early ‘90s, a Groundwater Management Plan was established to protect the resource for future generations. In 1997, a Groundwater Management Area was put in place for the entire district. As the groundwater monitoring continued, elevated levels of nitrates were detected in portions of Pierce & Madison Counties, which moved portions of those counties into Phase 2 and 3 designations of the Groundwater Management Area requirements. As part of the Lower Elkhorn NRD’s Groundwater Quality Sampling Program, technicians collect annual water samples to document changes or trends in groundwater quality. In recent years, elevated in groundwater nitrates have been detected in portions of Cuming, Colfax, and Dodge Counties. In October 2020, the Lower Elkhorn NRD Board of Directors voted to begin the formal process of considering a Phase 2 Groundwater Management Area in portions of these three counties.

ISU Confinement Site Manure Applicator workshops

Confinement site manure applicators and anyone interested in learning about manure issues should plan to attend a two-hour workshop offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in January or February 2021. These workshops are offered in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, registration is required. No walk-ins allowed. There is no fee to attend the workshops, but applicators will need to pay certification fees to complete certification requirements.

A total of 64 counties will participate in the confinement site manure applicator workshops. In addition, a series of six dry/solid manure applicator certification meetings will be held in February.  These meetings are tailored toward dry/solid manure for either Commercial or Confinement Site manure applicators. ISU Extension and Outreach county offices have a complete list of workshop dates and locations, or view a list online.

The workshops serve as initial certification for those applicators who are not currently certified, recertification for those renewing licenses and continuing education for those applicators in their second or third year of their license.

Due to uniform certification deadlines, applicators are encouraged to attend workshops prior to March 1 to avoid being assessed a late fee of $12.50 for those who are re-certifying. Those unable to attend one of the workshops need to schedule time with their ISU Extension and Outreach county office to watch the training video. Due to scheduling conflicts, extension offices will no longer accept walk-in appointments to watch these videos but do offer scheduled dates and times to provide this training. If you can’t attend training during one of the scheduled reshow dates at your county extension office, you will be charged a $10 fee to view the training at your convenience.

If attending the workshops or watching the two-hour training video is not convenient, confinement site manure applicators may contact their local DNR field office to schedule an appointment to take the certification exam to meet certification requirements.

Applicators also have another option, online certification, through which an applicator can take their training online at DNR MAC eLearning site at https://elearning-dnr.iowa.gov/. The applicator will need to sign-in and get an A&A account.

NE Leopold Conservation Award Deadline

Know a Nebraska rancher, farmer or forester who goes above and beyond in the care and management of natural resources? Nominate them for the 2021 Nebraska Leopold Conservation Award®.

Sand County Foundation and national sponsor American Farmland Trust present the Leopold Conservation Award to private landowners in 21 states for extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation. In Nebraska, the $10,000 award is presented with Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska (AFAN), Cargill and the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes landowners who inspire others with their dedication to land, water and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. In his influential 1949 book, “A Sand County Almanac,” Leopold called for an ethical relationship between people and the land they own and manage.

Nominations may be submitted on behalf of a landowner, or landowners may nominate themselves. The application can be found at www.sandcountyfoundation.org/ApplyLCA.

IFBF Economic Summit series

The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) opened registration today for the  2021 Iowa Farm Bureau Economic Summit Webinar Series and unveiled participation by nationally-renowned experts, such as USDA Chief Economist Dr. Rob Johansson and the incoming USDA Chief Economist Dr. Seth Meyer who will respectively be current in their roles at USDA when they speak during their scheduled sessions.  These experts, along with several others, will share valuable insights into economic drivers impacting markets, including opportunities to lock in profits and manage risks, which is welcomed news as farmers navigate a volatile ag economy.

The free six-part webinar series kicks off Thursday, Jan. 14, at 1:00 p.m. and will take place each Thursday through February 25, apart from Thursday, Feb. 18, due to UDSA’s 2021 Agricultural Outlook Forum.

World Ag Expo – VIRTUAL

For the first time in show history, the 2021 World Ag Expo will be an online event February 9-11. Officials at the International Agri-Center announced the cancellation of the live event on September 14, and spent the next month carefully weighing the implications of a digital show.

World Ag Expo will work with Map Your Show, an industry leader in event and conference management software. The Map Your Show team has executed more than 120 digital trade shows since March.

While most digital trade shows have limited their online show to their traditional dates, the World Ag Expo team is taking a year-long approach.

World Ag Expo Online will kick off February 9-11, 2021 – the original show dates. Live events and seminars will be scheduled 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. PST each day, but content will be available on-demand at no charge to attendees around the clock.

Land Application Training-Session 1
Feb 9 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

The NE Extension Animal Manure Management team has opted to change the format of live Land Application Training events this year. In February and March, the team will host a series of three 1.5-hour long zoom sessions that will serve as the first portion of initial land application training. Recertification training and the last segment of initial training will be held at a later date, hopefully in-person. Anyone is welcome to participate in the zoom sessions, but participation at each session will be limited to keep them interactive and informative.

Session 1 will focus on Minding Your Manure Manners and will be held on February 9 at 1 pm and will be repeated on February 15 at 7 pm, so sign up for the time slot that fits your schedule best. We will discuss manure contaminants and transport, setbacks, stockpiles and manure transfers during the session.

Session 2 will focus on Manure and Fertilizer: Complementary Roles and will be held on February 16 at 1 pm and repeated on February 22 at 7 pm. During this session, participants will learn how to account for nutrients in manure and how to know how much manure is being applied.

Session 3 will discuss the various Benefits and Barriers to Manure Use. It will be held on February 23 at 1 pm and repeated on March 1 at 7 pm. This session will help participants value their manure and learn how to reap manure’s environmental benefits.

The 4th session has not been set as we hope to hold it in-person at many locations across the state, but it will focus on Applying Manure Management Concepts On-Farm. This session will be highly participant-led, and each session will have limited seating. Watch for more information in the coming months.

Because of participation limits in each session, registration is required. If registration numbers exceed expectations, more sessions may be added. To ensure you can attend, register at http://water.unl.edu/lat. Cost of the sessions are as follows:
    Individual Zoom Sessions, $10 each
    Initial Training (all sessions), $75
